Soil : Sandy loam to loam, mostly sandy in cold desert and clay loam in mid-hills. Generally neutral with varies from 23cm.-46 cms. followed by hard and graval starta.

  • Sub-tropical in lower parts
  • Temperate in mid-hills
  • Arctic in higher hills
Rainfall :

Less than 500mm in Lahaul-Spiti (Rain shadow area) to over 3400mm in Kangra (Dharamsala, the second wettest place in India after Cherrapunji, Meghalaya)

 
Drainage : Forms catchments of Sutlej-Yamuna basin.
