Beas River (Vedic

and in later Sanskrit Vipasa)

Beas river named after the Sage Beas,
the Beas originates from the Beas Kund high in the mountains near the
Rohtang Pass. It flows through the meadows near
Manali
through the orchards of Kullu and through the Largi gorge to
Mandi in the west. The The river Beas forms the
valleys of Kullu and Kangra. |

Sutlej River

Sutlej river is the largest of the
Himachal's rivers. It rises from Rakas Lake across the India border near
the southern slopes of the Kailash range. After traversing a
distance of over 300km from Rakas lake it enters the eastern
border of Himahal Pradesh at Shipki and flows in the south
west direction. Joined by the Spiti and the
Baspa in Kinnaur, the Sutlej, Soan river joins near its gorge
across the Shivalik hills. An immense lake, Govind Sagar, has also
been created by blocking Sutlej in Bhalera which is
excellent for angling. |

Chandrabhaga or River
Chenab (Vedic name
Askni) |

The two independent streams, Chandra on
the south-east side and Bhaga of the north-west of the
Baralacha Pass join at Tandi in Lahaul District to form the
Chandrabhaga of Chenab. t then flows northwards into the Pangi
valley of Chamba District near Bhujind. Making its
tempestuous way through a deep and narrow gorge, it then enters podar valley of Kashmir. |

Originating from Yamunotri in Garhwal
Himalayas, the river Yamuna enters Himachal Pradesh at Khadar
Majri in Sirmaur district, the eastern most part of the
state. Tons, Pabbar and Giri Ganga are its important tributaries in
Himachal. |
